Description

Captured ships:

  • St Peter of Bruges (master Peter Petue); St Peter of Bruges (master Giles de Suter); and Whiting of Bruges (master Michael Dover or Cornelis Butts);
  • St Peter of Brussels (master Gerard Randen or Gerrit Reijnders);
  • St Bartholomew of Nieuwpoort (master Thomas Rubens); St Jacob of Nieuwpoort (master Jacob Lorin Pousijn); St Judith of Nieuwpoort (master Adrian Vroome); St Peter of Nieuwpoort (master Christian Arnodt); and St Peter of Nieuwpoort (master Peter Stenkijst).

History: nine Flemish oyster boats, come from the Spanish Netherlands to the oyster fishery at Faversham or East Swale, Kent; and there seized between December 1672 or January 1673, to the use of the Duke of York as Lord Admiral [droits].

Court papers, numbered CP 1- :-

  • CP 1: commission and interrogatories, December 1672;
  • CP 2-CP 11: ten examinations (1 per ship, but two for St Peter of Nieuwpoort, of Christian Arnodt and Giles Arnodt);
  • CP 12-CP 13: two appraisements of decayed oysters at East Swale, January 1673;
  • CP 14: court note on the St Bartholomew of Nieuwpoort (master Thomas Rubens).

Ship's papers, numbered SP 1-5:-

  • SP 1-SP 2: passes (with seals);
  • SP 3: certfiied extract from Nieuwpoort baptismal records;
  • SP 4: ship's paper;
  • SP 5: wrapper.
