This series contains a physical scale model of the as-built condition of a typical bay of the external façade of Grenfell Tower made for and used by the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
The model was fabricated by Pipers Model Makers under instructions from expert witness Paul Hyett. It was designed to show a typical bay of the tower, but specifically where the fire started. It also illustrates the building façade at different stages:
- Stage 1: Showing the original concrete façade-treatment
- Stage 2: Showing the new façade treatment/cladding installed, from surveys carried out onsite
- Stage 3: How the cladding should have been installed onto the building façade
The model has a number of parts, as it is modelled accurately to show each stage. These can be simplified into the following categories:
- Original concrete façade
- Hanging brackets and insulation
- Aluminium panels
The model was referred to in evidence on 2 November 2020 (day 63 of the Inquiry). The following documents and instructions relating to the model were published in evidence: PHY0000001.pdf, PHY0000002.pdf, PHY0000003.pdf, PHY0000004.pdf, PHY0000005.pdf, PHY0000006.pdf and PHY0000007.pdf.
