The Coalfields Task Force originated in the RD2 Division (Regeneration Directorate) of the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. The Coalfields Task Force continued its work within the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions, and later in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Department for Communities and Local Government. The impetus was a report of June 1998 titled 'A New Deal for the Coalfields'. As a result, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust was set up with an initial budget of £50 million over three years. The Coalfields Task Force acts as the policy-maker and the Trust carries out the implementation of the policies.
