The Central Metallurgical Laboratory at Emsworth originated as the metallurgical laboratory of the Engineering Department at Portsmouth Dockyard in about 1936. It was the main centre for metallurgical research for the Navy, and had outstation laboratories at dockyards at Chatham, Devonport, Rosyth, Singapore and Malta. Its closure in 1956 led to the dispersal of its functions to the Admiralty Chemical Department, Portsmouth and the Admiralty Materials Laboratory.
