The Admiralty Craft Experimental Establishment emerged at the end of the Second World War as part of the Directorate of Craft and Amphibious Material. It was based on Haslar near Gosport, and was used mainly by the Directorate of Naval Equipment to undertake sea trials of patrol boats and development of coastal attack craft and equipment for them. In 1950 it was absorbed into HMS Hornet, the coastal forces base at Haslar, as its sea trials and development section.
