Harold Adrian Russell (Kim) PHILBY: British. PHILBY became a committed communist while at Cambridge University in the early 1930s. He was recruited by Arnold DEUTSCH, an officer of the Russian Intelligence Services (RIS), in 1934 and became the first of the Cambridge Five ring of spies. PHILBY joined SIS in 1940 and rose to a senior position, serving in Washington from 1949-1951. Following the defection of fellow RIS agents Guy BURGESS and Donald MACLEAN in 1951, PHILBY came under suspicion and intensive investigation by MI5. However, it wasn't until 1963 that conclusive was obtained identifying him as a spy. This led him to make a partial confession, after which, with the assistance of RIS, he was able to defect to the Soviet Union
