Gisela ASHLEY: German, British. ASHLEY, a German citizen who married and later divorced an Englishman, moved to London in the early 1930s where she co-wrote a number of West End plays. She was recruited as an MI5 agent and deployed to the Netherlands and Belgium in the late 1930s to gather intelligence on Nazi activity there. A possible compromise of her identity ended her operational career. Under the new name Susan BARTON, she joined MI5's wartime Double Cross section, B1a, assisting agents such as TRICYCLE and ZIGZAG where her German background and language were great assets.
