Description

Folios 454-455: Sylverius Moriarty, Regulating Officer, Cork. Reports that the man who brought the enclosed letter says that the fishermen who were within 2 miles of the Privateer found her to be as large as a 36-gun ship. This morning she was close to land between Old Head and Cape Cear [Clear, Cork]. He will send immediately to Captain Norman, but his ship will hardly be useful in this emergency through lack of guns and a regular ship's company.

Folios 456-457: enclosure with folios 454-455. Letter dated 25 May 1793 from Lieutenant William Moore, Kinsale to Captain Moriarty. One of the fishing boats belonging to Kinsale was taken by a French Privateer Ship of[f] Baltimore, and has been seen by the boats between Kinsale and the Cape. She chased a sloop loaded with rock salt into Castle Haven.

Folio 458: enclosure with folios 454-455. Letter dated 24 May 1793 from Gerald Gibbon, Cove, to Sylverius Moriarty, Cork. The sloop Chartoll and Ester from Plymouth, loaded with bark, arrived this evening. On 17 May she saw HMS Hind with a French Privateer of 22 guns, which she captured off Scilly.
