The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) was formed in February 2023 alongside the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) following the dissolution of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) after a cabinet reshuffle.
DSIT inherited remits from BEIS and from one of BEIS's predecessors, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), as well as the digital remit from the former Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (later Department for Culture, Media and Sport). DSIT is responsible for research and development (R&D) funding, supporting innovations to improve public services and boost economic growth through infrastructures and regulations, expanding the UK's presence in global scientific and technological advancements and delivering talent programmes to create new jobs. DSIT also inherited the Office for Artificial Intelligence and fully integrated it in 2024.
