Administrative / biographical background

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) was formed in February 2023 alongside the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) following the dissolution of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) after a cabinet reshuffle.

DESNZ inherited remits from BEIS and from one of BEIS's predecessors, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). DESNZ is responsible for energy security, reducing carbon emissions, supporting net zero initiatives, protecting consumers and supporting the clean energy industry to contribute to economic growth.
