Folios 577-578: John Hancock, HMS Liffey, Spithead.
He reports that his ship is laboursome at sea and rolls heavily in all weather. Frequently the main deck and guns are full of water while damage has been caused to the masts and yards. He believes that the ballast has not been properly stowed and that the very long masts may be one of the causes. HMS Severn is a ship of the same class and has similar problems but was cured by the re-stowing of ballast.
