Description

Folios 572-573: John Hancock, HMS Liffey, Spithead.

Reports his arrival having left St Lawrence on 10 November with 19 sail under convoy [list not present]. Thirteen sail parted company in bad weather on the night of 14 November 1814, and the remaining five on 18 November 1814. He also reports that bad weather on the outward journey caused the convoy to disperse. After the gale ceased he collected twenty two sail including, the store ship HMS Dromedary bound for Halifax, arriving at Quebec on 28 October 1814 [list not present]. As directed he remained there until departing on 10 November 1814 and refers to the enclosures. One hundred supernumeraries for Sir James Yeo were embarked onto a transport at Quebec and sailed for Montreal on their way to the Lakes.

Folios 574-575: enclosure with folios 572-573. Sir Sydney Beckwith, Quartermaster General, Montreal, 30 October 1814 asks John Hancock to delay his departure. Major General Glasgow will give further information in the absence of Sir George Prevost. News is expected from the Niagara frontier.

Folio 576: enclosure with folios 572-573. Sir George Glasgow, Quebec, 1 November 1814 writes to John Hancock that a number of transports are waiting for their men from the Lakes, and many of the trade vessels are not read to depart, so asks him to delay sailing until 10 November 1814. He reports that the official accounts of the retreat of the American army from Fort Erie has not yet arrived and are of great importance to the government.
