Description

Folios 241-242: James Hillyar, HMS Phoebe, Valparaiso Bay, 11 April 1814 writes to the Supreme Director of Chile that Captain David Porter of the American ship Essex believed that the neutrality of the port was violated when the British captured his frigate and that Porter threatens to return with a frigate to destroy the British vessel.

Folios 243-246: Francesco de la Lastra, Santiago de Chile, 11 April 1814. A translation of letter number 4. He writes to James Hillyar referring to the Manifesto from the government of Chile defending its right to detain the Portugese ship La Fama.

Folios 247-248: headed ‘letter from Mr Munro after seeing the letter number 4 and the documents in it’. Andrew Munro, Santiago, 14 May 1814 writes to James Hillyar about the losses sustained by the British government from the incident with the ship La Fama. Justifies his claims.

Folios 249-250: Andrew Munro and J N Crompton, Valparaiso, 11 April 1814 write to James Hillyar as British merchants trading with Chile. They believe that he should accept the invitation to go to Santiago and obtain redress for the many problems they are facing.

Folios 251-253: headed number 5 ‘affirmative answer to my letter of 14 May 1814’. Signed Fransesco de la Lastra, Santiago, 23 May 1814 writes to James Hillyar.

Folios 253-254: headed number 5, translation made by George Cood of the letter at folios 251-252. De la Lastra writes to James Hillyar about the claims made by Andrew Munro about losses sustained after the incident involving the ship La Fama.

Folios 255-258: Andrew Munro, Valparaiso, 28 May 1814 writes to James Hillyar having received a letter from the Government of Chile and he thanks Hillyar for his efforts on his behalf. The government of Chile has made at least some remuneration for the losses sustained by the British government. Folios 256-257: George Cood, Valparaiso, 28 May 1814 writes to James Hillyar writes that the brig Good Friends, master R N Murphy but which Cood owns, about losses sustained since Christmas 1812. He had assembled cargo for loading the brig but the goods were perishable and so lost. James Hillyar forwards to the Supreme Director of Chile enclosing the letter from Cood and asks for appropriate licences to be issued.

Folios 259-260: states Undigested Papers 1814.

Folios 261-262: James Hillyar, Santiago d Chile, 20 April 1814 replies to the Supreme Director of Chile’s letter of 13 April 1814. That the British authorities strictly forbid interference between Spain and her colonies. Nevertheless he will attempt to mediate.

Folios 263-264: headed number 6. Translation follows.

Folios 265-266: Fransisco de la Lastra, 13 April 1814 expresses gratitude to James Hillyar for his efforts to mediate and describes the disposition of the two armies.

Folios 267-268: headed number 8, James Hillyar, HMS Phoebe, Santiago de Chile, 19 April 1814 writes that the Viceroy of Peru told him of his detestation of violence and hopes for peace.

Folios 269-270: headed number 9. Fransisco de la Lastra , 26 April 1814, Santiago, in Spanish writes to James Hillyar.

Folios 271-272: headed number 10. 23 April 1814, Falca, Gavino Gainza writes in Spanish to Hillyar.

Folios 273-274: headed number 11. Bernard O’Higgins, 24 April 1814 writes in Spanish to Hillyar.

Folios 275-276: headed number 12. Juan Mackenna and Bernard O’Higgins write in Spanish to James Hillyar.

Folio 277: headed number 13. G Gainza, 26 April 1814, writes in Spanish to James Hillyar.

Folios 278-279: headed number 14.G Gainza, Falca, 26 April 1814, writes in Spanish to James Hillyar.

Folios 280-281: headed number 15. Signed Cichevennia, and others. In Spanish.

Folio 282: headed number 16. G Gainza, 28 April 1814 writes in Spanish to James Hillyar.
