Folios 240-241: Sir Richard John Strachan, HMS Donegal, at sea. Has given Captain Edward Buller of HMS Malta sealed instructions to follow in the event of separation, but these were not followed but Captain Buller has sailed independently and now asks that he should explain his actions.
Folios 242-243: enclosure in folios 240-241. Copy of a letter dated 5 September 1803 from Sir Richard John Strachan, HMS Donegal, off Cape St Marys to Captain Sir Edward Buller HMS Malta. On orders from Admiral Campbell I order you to proceed to join the Honourable Admiral Cornwallis off Brest or wherever he may be with the Fleet, you are at liberty to proceed while I proceed towards Cadiz.
Folios 244-245: enclosure in folios 240-241. Letter dated 5 September 1803 from Sir Richard John Strachan, HMS Donegal, off Cape St Mary. Conclude the Commander-in-Chief Vice Admiral Lord Nelson that HMS Donegal and HMS Maidstone are ordered to Gibraltar to watch the French fleet that have gone to Cadiz and to protect the trade in the Straits of Gibraltar, has preceded the convoy from Malta which is under HMS Blonde and HMS Experiment who then proceeded to Cadiz, encloses a copy of his letter [not present] to Captain Edward Buller which report no Spanish ships in Cadiz and the French L'Aigle preparing to enter dock.
