Description

Folios 236-237: Sir Richard John Strachan, HMS Donegal, off Cape St Marys. I conclude that the Commander in Chief Vice Admiral Lord Nelson has acquainted you that HMS Donegal and HMS Maidstone being ordered to Gibraltar for the purpose of watching the French ship of the line and frigate that have gone in to Cadiz, and to cruise in the Gut of Gibraltar for the protection of passing trade, having arrived and preceded the convoy from Malta whish was under HMS Blonde and HMS Experiment, they were directed to call off Cadiz to take up any British trade, but none being there as Captain Sir Edward Buller informed him and has seen the Convoy on their way, has received orders from Rear Admiral Sir George Campbell on HMS Canopus off Majorca to order HMS Malta to join Admiral Sir George Cornwallis when I fell in with that ship on arrival in Cadiz, Captain Sir Edward Buller confirms there are no Spanish ships of the line ready for sea and the French ship L'Aigle is preparing to dock.

Folios 238-239: enclosure in folios 236-237. Letter dated 5 September 1803 from Sir Richard John Strachan, HMS Donegal, off Cape St Mary's to Captain Sir Edward Buller, HMS Malta. On orders from Rear Admiral Sir George Campbell, you are to proceed to join Admiral Sir George Cornwallis off Brest whenever you think fit, I shall return to Cadiz, take care of the valuable convoy under the care of HMS Blonde and HMS Experiment.
