Description

Folios 266-274. Letter dated [April 25 new style] at Paris from Lord Portland to the King. He is awaiting the King's response to his letter of 10/20 in which he sent the proposals regarding the Spanish succession, following which he hopes to be able to arrange his return. Reports on his activities, visiting Monsieur and the French King's movements. Relays unconfirmed rumours that the French have issued orders in all the ocean ports to make preparation (quelque equipage), but to what extent is not known; that the money had been delivered to hurry it on; that sixteen thousand sailors would be raised, and, to facilitate this, an embargo had been put on all ships wishing to leave. His informant had concluded that, if the King of Spain's health continued to improve, this must be connected with the Spanish West Indies. Mr. Heemskercke is now staying near Paris, as his house is not ready; Lord Portland plans to mention the matters of Orange and Burgundy to him when he sees him. He has no news of Mr. d'Odijck, except that he was to leave Zeeland last Saturday. Refers to requests from the Duchess of Portsmouth and her sister to travel to England. He has been swindled by a certain Davits, who was to reveal a conspiracy against the King but has now disappeared.
