Description

Folios 108-112. Folios 108-109. Letter dated at Althorpe [Northamptonshire] from Lord Sunderland to the King. 'Having received a letter from my Lord Shrewsbury relating to his coming to town, I think it my duty to lay it before your Majesty with a copy of my answer to it. Mr [James] Vernon has acquainted me with your resolutions concerning my Lord Clancarty, which obliges me. I assure your Majesty I do most willingly submit to your pleasure and acknowledge the consideration you think fit to have of me and my daughter'. Folios 110-112. The copy letter from Lord Sunderland to the Duke of Shrewsbury about the former's decision to resign as Lord Chamberlain that he did 'with a desire never to have anything to do again in public business, for sure it was the wrongest step that could be made, if 'he 'had not been very positively of that mind'. Although his judgment and inclination are still the same, he submits both to the King 'who was more displeased and angry' and less indifferent than he imagined which obliges him to be disposed of as the King pleases provided he is given leave to serve as a privy councillor only without a place. Sunderland makes plain his reluctance should the King decide to make use of him in business and Shrewsbury retire 'for there will be nothing but disorder, confusion and groundless fears and jealousies'. His 'politics are not changed, nor shall they'.
