Folios 40-46. Letter dated [February 9 new style] at Paris from Lord Portland to the King reporting on his audience with the French King at Versailles. On the one hand they seem to seek to flatter him, but on the other hand the English followers of King James are admitted to Court every day, even in his presence. He saw the Duke of Berwick and Lord Middleton and several others in passing, though they avoid talking business with him until after his public audience, which makes him wary and will force him to ask that the French King's gracious assurances and promises may be carried into effect without delay. He doesn't think he will be able to see Made, de M[ainteno]n; the Comtesse de Grammont would wish him to do so, but so far as he could understand this lady [? Madame de Maintenon] and she are on the side of the Court of St. Germain, the former by a conscientious scruple and a pretence of pity. Complaints regarding his delayed baggage. He is greatly vexed that his name has again been mentioned in the House of Commons, but the King says with good reason that it is most difficult to judge how this mood of the House of Commons will end. He is sending his letter with the Duke of St Albans.
