Folios 29-39. Letter dated [ February 5 new style] at Paris from Lord Portland to the King. Reports that Marshal de Boufflers and the Duke de Grammont came to see him on his arrival last Friday night and were extremely civil; he talked with them of delays to his baggage being an obstacle to his public audience, but hoped a private audience with the French King would enable him to carry out King William's orders. They assured him of a private audience on Monday morning. They subsequently reported back to him that the King had been impressed with the zeal he had shown and wished to see him as soon as possible; on Monday he was taking medicine, but would give Portland an audience on Tuesday as soon as he was dressed. At their meeting, after Portland had relayed what the King had ordered, the French King expressed strongly his desire to maintain the peace, to cultivate a close union and friendship with the King, and that he would never fail to do on his side all that he could to contribute to it. They should put the war behind them and only look to the good of the future. Lord Portland asked the French King's leave to formally wait upon him on his return from Marli, in anticipation of his public audience, and received permission to do so. Discussion of other social engagements with the Dauphin, his sons the three princes, the Duchess of Burgundy, the Marquis de Torcy, the Archbishop of Rheims, Marshal de Boufflers, the Dukes de Grammont and de Chevreuse, the Marquis de Giévre, the Comte de Tallard, Mr. le Premier and many others of the chief people of the Court. Describes how anxious all the people of quality there were to express their high opinion of the King. He will return to Versailles to see the French King upon his return from Marli.
