The Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive fell within the Water Availability and Quality Programme. The Directive protects the environment from the adverse effects of urban waste water discharges from certain industrial sectors and concerns the collection, treatment and discharge of: domestic waste water, mixture of waste water, and waste water from certain industrial sectors. One of the Directive's key functions, was issues surrounding the new Thames Tideway Tunnel. Additional responsibilities of the Programme included: water quality, groundwater directive, priority substances, bathing water directive, freshwater fish directive, shellfish waters directive, sustainable water.
