Description

Folios 279-282. Unsigned memorandum setting out plans for the defence of the Low Countries. States that to defend the Low Countries the Spanish must provide for the protection of places in Flanders and Namur such that the Prince of Orange is able to join all the State troops with the Spanish Cavalry and post himself around Malines to be in a position to rescue places in Brabant and cover the countries of the United Provinces with a corps on the Meuse and another by the Moselle. Details plans for the Upper Rhine and the need for a corps to hold back the King of Denmark and keep him occupied at home. Sets out the number of troops envisaged to be contributed by Allied parties: for the Moselle - Marquis de Grana (25,000), Duke of Hanover (10,000), Sweden (6,000); for the Low Countries - Prince of Orange together with the Spanish (35,000); for 'Schonie' - Sweden (15,000); to distract the King of Denmark [Christian V}- Sweden (10,000); for Livonia - the Elector of Saxony (10,000) and Brunswick (5,000). On the side of the 'Milanes' an army of 18,000, and in Catalonia an army of 14,000, are provided for. Sensitivities around the movement of Swedish troops and provisions for how Swedish troops might be moved to Germany.
