Folios 238-240. Jean Adolf, Duke of Holstein, to the King, dated at Asse. Everything there is in the order his Majesty would desire. The appearance of Marshal Luxembourg at Courtrai creates apprehension for Flanders or Oudenaarde, to which the Marquet Regiment is marching and will remain for as long as they fear danger. The writer will remain at Asse until he knows the intentions of the enemy; the Hanoverian, Spanish, and Brandenburg troops are also there. For the rest, he refers to what he asked Monsieur Dickfelt to tell the King; fears that 'les Espagnols nous ferons bien trotter cet hiver, mais il ne leur faudra pas tousjour croire' Jean Adolf, Duke of Holstein, to the King, dated at Ninove. Finds himself there in a bad state, with the enemy marching on all sides. It is said that Boufflers has brought with him 22 infantry battalions and 42 cavalry squadrons and that Luxembourg has sent him better troops (namely 36 battalions and 40 squadrons) which must have started to march before yesterday. Given the condition of the army, he sees no possibility of doing anything on the side of Liege without abandoning everywhere else, and thought it best instead to guard Flanders and Brussels. Believes Boufflers will ruin at least all of the quarters between Maastricht and Liege, in which case he seeks the King's orders on where to lodge the regiment. Reminds the King of the need to consider remounting the cavalry and new recruits if they want to be in a position to do something by spring. Luneburg is marching with the rest of the army towards Courtrai to quarter there.[the Spaniards will make us trot well this winter, but they will not always have to believe'].
