Folios 226-234. Maximilian Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, to the King, dated at Ninove. The Marquis of Spinola having arrived from Charleroi with news on behalf of Senor del Castillo of the capitulation of Charleroi. This was expected and so causes no chagrin unlike the bad news Spinola has also brought him regarding Piedmont. Catinat is understood to have told the King of France that never has he seen so complete a victory: 34 pieces of canon are taken, Monsieur de Schomberg is prisoner and so on. Enclosures: (1) [Folio 227] Extracts (i) from a letter dated 12 October 1693 at the Chateau de Creus, reporting on the capitulation of Charleroi and that the Governor and Monsieur Castillo obtained all that they reasonably asked for; they will evacuate on Monday with the garrison taken to Louvain. The French army is understood to be too weary to undertake anything further. (ii) from Gosselies, 11 October 1693, on the preparations for capitulation of Charleroi. (2) [Folio 228] Translation of a letter from Monsieur Castillo to the Elector, dated 12 October 1693, reporting on the conditions leading to the capitulation of Charleroi, namely that the enemy being on the point of entering the breach and the men being so tired from the work and not having left their posts in four days, it was decided that it would be hopeless to await the inevitable assault, rather capitulating honourably. Tells of his inexpressible pain (amid the disgrace of having lost the place) at not having been in a position to await the general assault. Regrets that he will not be able to go before he Elector while a wound to his head (received when the enemy attacked the counterscarp) is healing. (3) [Folios 229-230] Letter from Monsieur Castillo dated 12 October 1693 at Charleroi repeating the content of the previous enclosure. (4) [Folios 231-234] The Capitulation of the town of Charleroi on 11 October 1693 made by Don Francisco Del Castillo Faxardo, Marquis de Villa de Arias and accorded by Monsieur the Duke of Luxembourg, General of the His Catholic Majesty. Sets out the terms of the capitulation.
