Folios 219-220. Maximilian Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, to the King, dated at Ninove. Received from Lord Galway the King's letter with orders for the Count of Tserclaes and Baron Hayden [See SP 8/14 ff 206-208] and explained his intentions in more detail verbally, regarding which he has conferred with the Duke of Holstein, the Duke of Wirtemburg, Monsieur de Bedmar, Monsieur d'Ouerkerk and Lord Galway. They found things much changed since the departure of the latter for various reasons outlined, such that they fear it is impossible for the place to defend itself until rescue can reach it. Accordingly, they found unanimously that the rescue could not take place, which he felt it his duty to relay to the King. [P.S. Relays news received from locals - 'to be treated with caution - that the enemy launched an assault on the place and was rebuffed with great vigour, notably by a General whose name is not yet known'.]
