Folio 114. The Prince de Conti to the Princess de Conti, dated at the Camp at Quarrem. Tells her she need not fear that they will attack the retrenchments of Liege as the enemy still have 32 battalions and nearly 3,000 horses there, and on their (the French) side they are less in condition to do it that they were before the battle. The enemy are in alarm: the Dutch who were not killed on the field of battle (Landen) have gone to Holland; the English cavalry, which displayed much courage, is almost destroyed, as well as the Spanish, Bavarian, and Hanoverian. There is no sign that the Prince of Orange will reappear before them in battle and risk losing a second battle, which could entirely destroy his affairs. Until the last half hour of the last action, there was not one amongst them that believed the battle lost, such was the incredible courage and leadership of the Prince of Orange throughout. Not one of his soldiers was so much exposed as himself; they several times saw him charging at the head of his squadron. Nearly all of his Generals were killed taken or wounded. The Prince of Conti begs the Princess not to repeat his praises of the Prince of Orange; it would be best to leave him undisturbed in 'his [Kingdom of] England' and to make peace. The Princess need have no fear as to the writer's health, for his wound is progressing favourably. Sends his compliments to the family of the Chevalier de Rohan and to Mme de Mont Chevreuil. Copy.
