Description

Folios 82-87. Prince Louis of Baden to the King, dated at Hailbrun [Heilbronn]. Does not yet know whether the Dauphin has passed the Moselle so they remain unable to ascertain the enemy's plans. Reports indicate the passage of the Neckar by the army of Monsieur de Lorge, and the rumour is that they will besiege Mainz, which strikes Prince Louis of Baden as a very great undertaking, albeit not entirely impossible. He has marched to Heilbronn, crossing the Neckar, still with the aim of defending the river and approaching Heidelberg to post himself at a height from which he can always keep an eye on that country [Swabia]. Meanwhile, he has returned to the Landgrave the 2,000 horses he had marched to him, and awaits by the hour news of where that army will be posted and what it plans for the good of the common cause. As regards the neutrality that the King seems to fear on the side of Swabia and Franconia, no one has made mention of it, and he finds them to the contrary quite firm, and flatters himself that he may keep them on that footing provided the rest of the Empire also plays their part and that they are not required to march and 're-march' to the point of exhaustion and inability to defend themselves. [P.S. he has agreed with the Council and the Elector of Bavaria to provide bread to his six battalions which are still in Bavaria such that he hopes to see them arrive soon; has also had some Swabian battalions join him from the Black Forest.]
