Description

Folios 56-63. Prince Louis of Baden to the King, dated at the camp between Heilbronn and Laufen. Reports that they had sighted the enemy army commanded by Monsieur de Lorge camping within in range of their cannons, following which they fired cannons and muskets on 2 June. The enemy army [responded with] more than 1,000 unsuccessful cannon fires at times above and at times below the camp of some of the regiments of the allied army. Describes the bravery of his troops and asserts that Marshal de Lorge would not have grounds to denigrate them. If Lorge had planned to push them into entering some kind of treaty with France, he nonetheless retreated by the same route that he came in on after having battered them about on all sides for four days. De Lorge did not burn/destroy everything and it remains to be seen which way he will turn not yet having crossed the Rhine. The Count de Lippe joined him three days ago with 2,000 horses which the Landgrave had march to his rescue. He is asking of Saxony 2-3,000 horses, as he has no means to feed more troops and given the need for a considerable corps to remain in the area of Frankfurt and Mainz. Asks for the King's help in pressing for the necessaries. [P.S. Just now receiving the King's letter of 1 June and it occurs to him that if they could find a way to reach an accommodation with the Elector of Bavaria for his 3,000 infantrymen still in Bavaria to join his or the Elector of Saxony's army, this would be the most convenient assistance available.]
