Description

Folios 272-275. Letter dated at the camp of Drongen from Maximilian Emmanuel, Elector of Bavaria, to the King. Has just received news from the Count of Liberchi that the Duke of Luxemburg marched with part of his army yesterday, and that the rest is following. From news obtained from a nobleman of the country, who seems to have reliable intelligence, it appears that the enemy has designs on Charleroi and even have some intelligence in that place; moreover the Marquis de Boufflers - having a corps of troops in the area - will so place his army, that it will be difficult to help the place. This being so, I have written to General Fleming to ask him to observe the movements of Boufflers and to not retreat to quarters without letting him know in advance; in the event that it looked like Boufflers would invest the place it would be well to order General Castillo to join Baron Flemming and prevent access to the enemy. It would be well if the King ordered the Duke of Leinster to join him, with his troops, ensuring he leaves enough men to guard Dixmunde. In the meantime, he has alerted the Governor of Charleroi of their apprehensions, and ordered him to be prepared and keep his eyes peeled, as well as to make the neighbouring governors aware of the same.to observe Boufflers' movements. In a postscript the writer adds that he has just heard from the Governor of Charleroi.
