Administrative / biographical background

Within the Department of the Environment, the Local Government Directorate existed from 1995 to 1999.

The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) succeeded the Department of the Environment. On its formation in 1999/2000, the Local Government Legislation Division within DETR had 3 different branches: Branch 1 had responsibility for general powers and duties of local authorities; Branch 2 had responsibility for ethics in local government; and Branch 3 had responsibility for the management of local government legislation in Parliament.

In 2005 the division was re-titled Local Government Liaison Division and had the following 5 branches: Branch 1 had responsibility for freedom and flexibilities for local government; Branch 2 had responsibility for working with other government departments to improve engagement with local government; Branch 3 had responsibility for supporting local and regional government research issues; Branch 4 had responsibility for preparing community strategies and promoting economic, social and environmental wellbeing; and Branch 5 had responsibility for policy on local area agreements.
