Modern county courts in England and Wales were established under the County Courts Act 1846 as exclusively civil courts. Despite the name, their jurisdiction has never been based on counties. Their organisation was modified by subsequent legislation, including Acts of 1867, 1888 and 1971. Under the Crime and Courts Act 2013, the system of local county courts was replaced from 2014 by a single County Court sitting in multiple locations.
Civil cases cover a variety of situations where individuals or organisations believe that their rights have been infringed or that they are owed money. The majority of civil cases are now heard in the County Court, although some are heard by magistrates or in the High Court.
