From 1997 Funding Agency for Schools
The Funding Agency for Schools was set up by the Education Act 1993 and began to operate in April 1994.
The Agency was responsible for paying grants to grant-maintained schools, for monitoring their finances and for planning the provision of school places in those areas of the country where the number of pupils in grant-maintained schools exceeds 10%. In addition, it also carried out value for money studies as required, provided information and advice to the Secretary of State and carried out other activities in connection with the discharge of its key functions, including the undertaking of research studies. It was also involved with OFSTED on the maintaining of other schools.
In 1998, the agency was wound up, and its funding functions were returned to Local Education Authorities.
