Administrative / biographical background

The history of the production of mapping for military purposes can be traced back to the 1747 Military Survey of Scotland and the establishment of the Depot of Military Knowledge in 1803. The Directorate of Military Survey was established in 1943 under the War Office for the production of maps and surveys across all military commands during the Second World War.

This function continued through successor organisations. The production of elements during Operation Banner was carried out by 42 Survey Engineer Regiment Royal Engineers, established in 1947 and subordinate to the Directorate and its successors. It was later known as the 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) and the Survey Production Centre Royal Engineers, and from 1970, as the Mapping and Charting Establishment Royal Engineers. From 1993 the production was passed on to the Geographic Services and later the Geographic Production divisions of the Military Survey Defence Agency (MSDA). It was then passed on to the Defence Geographic Centre when it was established in 2000.
