Description

Folios 192-195. The Duke of Lorraine to the King, dated at Namur. Speaks of the ill conduct of the Marquis of Gastanaga, who works against the King. While the King should not deign to think of him, it is necessary to make known his bad behaviour and how poor a servant he is to his master, in order to stifle all those of his faction (which may be numerous). Hears that the Elector of Bavaria seeks the post of Governor of the Low Countries, and urges that if the Marquis of Gastanaga is to be replaced, he be replaced as soon as possible. Since he [Lorraine] has been at this place, he has wasted no time in doing all that is possible to remedy defects, but hears from Brussels that the Marquis tells of his astonishment at what is taking so long given there are no defects etc. Refers to what he has done with respect to various works, and the ammunition, plans to move [300?] men of the guard into the town. The enemy has made large movements along the border for several days and their disposition threatened everything, but there has been a counter order and a change in what they wanted to undertake. He has written to the Prince of Waldeck requesting artillery/munitions and two battalions, but it seems that he is minded to provide neither one nor the other despite both being positively necessary. The arrival of troops from England is anxiously awaited.
