Folios 143-145. A letter from the Prince of Waldeck to the King, dated at Culenburg. The King will see the state of affairs from the enclosed letter from the Count of Solms and Waldeck's responses to it. He has written to Marshall Flemming to hold the 6,000 men stipulated in last winter's convention ready for the orders of the Count of Solms and he is pushing the Council of State for what is needed. His indisposition prevents him from acting physically, but otherwise he does what he must and can. If they were masters of a large sum of money they could prevent quite some things. The Bishop of Munster is sending his troops down towards their borders. Enclosure at f 144: Count de Solms to the Prince of Waldeck. Has been able to do very little and explains his difficulties. Suggests whether, in case of need, it would be well to advance the 'Scotch' battalions from Breda and Bergen-op-Zoom to posts on the canal while they find themselves forced perhaps to use other troops. The Prince of Vaudemont believes that the eight Danish battalions from Ireland had better be lodged at Bruges, Ostend or Nieuwpoort, but both the last two towns need to be put in a fit state for lodgings. The posts on the canal should be in a condition to accommodate people the next day. Enclosure at f 145: copy of a letter from the Prince of Waldeck to the Count of Solms, dated 21 November 1691 at Culenborg; expresses his regret at the news of the obstacles and dangers the Count has met with. Begs him, however, to neglect nothing and to try and carry out to the utmost all the wishes of the King. Owing to the writer's indisposition he is unable to come to him. he does not believe troops can leave Bergen-op-Zoom or Breda but will consult with the Counsel Pensionary on this. Discusses the withdrawal of the English troops from Breda.
