Description

Folios 80-81. A letter from Frederick, the Elector of Brandenburg to the King, dated at Potsdam. Has just received a letter from the Elector of Bavaria, in which he asks him to send a detachment of troops between the Meuse and the Rhine to fortify the border of Upper Germany, given the news he has received of the bad condition of the army on the Upper Rhine. The mortality amongst the troops of the Upper Rhine has weakened them severely, and the troops of the Emperor and of Saxony making up the army have separated going on the one hand towards the Black Forest and on the other to the country of the Elector their master. The said border will be very bare and unable to sustain attack from forces as considerable as those held by the enemy in the area. He does not believe the King will consider it reasonable for him to send his troops somewhere so far away and outside his allocated area between the Meuse and the Rhine, which he must maintain under the Treaty between himself and Spain of 7 September the previous year. He sees no other solution than for the Elector of Saxony to keep his army in quarters and for the Landgrave of Hesse to send part of his troops destined for the lower Rhine there. He believes that his troops, together with those of Cologne, of [Vuillers?] and of Liege could suffice in the Lower Rhine. He has written to the Court at Vienna and to the Landgrave and does not doubt that the King will agree and use his authority and good offices with Saxony and Hesse such that they take charge of maintaining the aforementioned border.
