Description

Folios 92-93. A letter from the Prince of Waldeck to the King, dated at Louvain. The party he sent to Giblou tell him the enemy has burned up to Hannut. He has had 26 squadrons assembled, with M d'Auerkerck [Ouwerkerk] and Count Tylly [Tilly] near the water with two batallions which were at [St Trond?]. Waldeck has recommended that they do not risk too much, and in case an army corps advances to leave one battalion in the water and retreat towards Louvain where he holds more troops ready to jump on Ouwerkerk. Waldeck has also brought back 20 pieces of artillery to Kampenhout. Has shared the King's intentions with General Spaen, alerted the two regiments with [Doerfling?] and Flemming not to cross the Meuse, and alerted Baron Hayden. At Maastricht, he is retrenching the ceremonial and other guards and with all that the soldiers had only one day of [rations?] which makes them desert without mentioning the bad humour in the town. The Prince of Anhalt writes from Aht [Ath?] that the [French] army in the neighbourhood of Kortrijk is more than 40,000 men, and a deserter who was taken prisoner says they estimate 60,000. Waldeck will stay there until he can tell the intentions of the enemy. It was decided at Brussels to send 200 dragoons to [Piedt?] and [900?] Brandenburgers to Nivelle. M de Varenne is to command if needed. Waldeck is concerned about his physical health given the breadth of the current state of affairs. He is becoming so deaf that he can barely understand what is said to him, but that does not stop him working with heart and spirit. He has asked the Count of Solms to go to Brussels to take care of matters there.
