Description

Folios 77-77A. A letter from Maximilian Emmanuel, Elector of Bavaria, to the King, dated at the Chateau of Liechtenberg [Lichtenberg]. He has had no resolution from the Court of Vienna on the affair in the two days since the Count of Caraffa and Baron Goertz came to find him there. He does not think he can do better than to surrender himself fully to the report that the King may receive from the Baron, who by his conduct merited being employed by the King in a matter of such great consequence. They will do their best with the troops they have there, before the Duke of Saxony arrives. He trusts that the Landgrave of Hesse will promptly put himself in range to help the troops that will remain on the Upper Rhine, according to the movement of the enemy, and that seeing a big effort on that side the Elector of Brandenburg would provide relief in the manner asked for by the Emperor. Refers to the King's letter of 20 April and adds that the loss of Mons is made even more disappointing by the fact that it could have resisted a few days longer, in which time rescue could have been possible. The Elector hopes that this will not discourage the King in his plans for the next campaign, as without an offensive operation the countries [of the Grand Alliance] there will run even more risk.
