Description

Folios 175-176: Solomon Ferris, HMS Hercule, Portsmouth Harbour. Covering letter for the enclosed copy of a letter addressed to the Navy Board in answer to which I am informed that the amount of the Slops 9as therein mentioned) will be charged against my wages unless the Admiralty will be pleased to dispense therewith. I request such a dispensation be issued.

Folios 177-178: enclosures with folios 175-176. Letter dated 8 December 1802 by Solomon Ferris, HMS Hercule, Portsmouth Harbour, to The Principal Offices of Commissioners of H M Navy. Most of the men entered to serve on HMS Hercule at the rendezvous in London having come on board quite destitute of clothing and it being necessary to give them slops and bedding to the full amount of the sum which he is instructed to great: he begs to state to the board that after such supply has been given the following men have Run from their leave, prior to their having been a sufficient time aboard to pay for the articles supplied; and therefore request to be informed if (under such circumstances) upon the passing his accounts he shall become responsible for the deficiency in the amount which the wages of the men will not pay for.
