Description

Folios 574-575: Alexander Fraser, HMS Shannon, Plymouth Sound. Advising of his arrival at this port to refit following damage to his Ship whilst carrying out the orders of Vice Admiral [Robert] Kingsmill [ previously known as Robert Brice] and pursuing a Corvette or very large enemy Privateer. The rock Ushant is also mentioned. A journal of proceedings, a State and Condition of Defects to the Ship and Vice Admiral [Robert] Kingsmill's orders are enclosed. (His Journal is not attached.)

Folio 576: enclosure with folios 574-575. Copy of Orders dated 4 February 1799 by Robert Kingsmill, Vice Admiral of the Red and Commander in Chief [Cork], HMS Polyphemus in Cork Harbour to Alexander Fraser, HMS Shannon. As he believes that the Enemy has a number of Privateers out, making preparations for a further Invasion of this Country from Brest, for Security and to protect Trade, he orders him to Cruise for 4 weeks between Scilly and Cape Clear, occasionally going as far as [Loophead?], returning for further orders at the end of this time. He should also communicate back any Intelligence of the Enemy.

Folio 577: enclosure with folios 574-575. Defects of HMS Shannon dated 3 March 1799 by Francis Barton, Carpenter, HMS Shannon Plymouth Sound to Alexander Fraser, Captain. Full list of damaged and broken parts of HMS Shannon, some of which had been carried away.
