Description (What the record is about)
-
Folios 304-305. A letter from the Prince of Waldeck to the King, dated at the camp at Halle. The Duke of Louxembourg is by [Guerrin?] with 58 batallions and 136 squadrons; while the allied troops are superior with three armies, subsistence means that they cannot force a battle and the disorder in the conjunction of the said three armies will not suffer just measures being taken. In the meantime, the Count of Harcourt has pulled some people from the garrisons and posted himself at Malmedy, where M. Beck and Swartz are leaving him at rest. It appears that the enemy will fortify itself. Waldeck has sent two Infantry regiments to Maastricht with the regiments of Obdam and Benting from Holland to the same place. With the troops from Liege they will secure the town of Liege. The Dauphin has crossed the Rhine and the Elector of Bavaria will join the Elector of Saxe who was only eight hours from him (and the Dauphin five hours from Bavaria). Waldeck hopes the fleet will cause some detachments from Luxembourg and that the King will send some troops to facilitate the plans and to occupy the winter quarters. Discusses the King's troops forming two corps alongside those of the United Provinces, so that one can oppose the 40,000 French and the others lay siege - they will not be able to enter that country easily without double hazard. Waldeck is in bed suffering from his old injury.
