Folios 163-166. A letter from the [Lord President] Carmarthen to [King William III] advising that the fleet is now out of danger [after the Battle of Beachy Head] and is probably at Gun Fleet [Gunfleet Sands] while the French are off Rye [Sussex]. The Dutch have burnt four of their ships, and the English have also set fire to HMS 'Ann' and may yet burn others. Four great ships will be ready in Chatham [Kent] and Portsmouth [Hampshire] in 14 days, but there will be manning difficulties. Mr Habbord [William Harboard] goes to Holland [Netherlands] tomorrow. At Brest, 28 French frigates are almost ready. [Admiral Cloudesley] Shovell's, Sanderson's, and [Admiral Henry] Killigrew's squadrons are to cruise the St George's Channel. Mentions: Lord Ross's behaviour; Sir James Montgomery; the Duke of Schomberg and the Scottish command; Lord Torrington; Lord Pembroke; Mr [Edward] Russell; Sir Richard Haddock; Sir Jo [John] Ashby; Mr Davis; Lord Grafton; a possible prorogation of parliament; and the Lord Lieutenancy of Leicestershire, which Lord Rutland declines.
