Description

Folios 154-155. A letter from Jo [Sir John] Hill, dated at Fort William alias Inverlochy [Inverness-shire] concerning sentiment in the western Highlands. The tutor of Appin has visited, and discussed terms for the delivery of Island [Castle] Stalker, for which he want 5,000 marks, in a deal involving the Laird of Appin and Major Genll McKay [Hugh Mackay] and his nephew Major Aeneas Mackay, and which would involve compensation for cows and horses taken into Argyllshire. Also, there's been a meeting of [John Cameron of] Lochiel the younger, Donald McDonald, Sir John Maclean, the Captain of [Macdonald of] Clanranald, [Macdonald of] Glengarry, Coll McDonald, most of whom will 'never be quiet' unless they hold the 'superiority of their lands' from the King. Hill advises casting 'a little largesse' on Lochiel, Glengarry, Coll and Maclean. He also reports that he has himself 'such a parcel of rogues' [?as tenants or inferiors], who all speak 'Irish' [Scottish Gaelic], that he is 'always in trouble'. To assist with the affairs of [the isle of] Lewis, Glengarry would be thankful for any favour or kindness shown him.
