Description

Folio 78-79. A letter from the Duke of Schomberg to the King, dated at Lisburne. He acknowledges receipt of the King's letter of the 9 [May], by which he understands that parliamentary business is delaying the King's departure. The cavalry is ready immediately, the horses all put to grass and in good condition. He hopes that those coming will bring tents with them. He awaits cavalry and infantry due to come by a ship that he is told has left. He hopes that all the artillery will arrive before the King. Charlemont has surrendered through want of provisions. He is pleased to hear that the King has had more artillery horses purchased as they will be much needed. He suggests the immediate dispatch of troops; he notes the news from Scotland that the Highlanders have suffered defeats and suggests the King could sent him some of the best regiments from there. Reports that Colonel Wolseley attacked Castle [Ballingarry?], taking it with 200 men leaving by capitulation without weapons; he left similar numbers in garrison. Wolseley lost at that castle a Danish captain, a sergeant, three-four soldiers and as many wounded. Wolseley himself was lightly wounded. Schomberg told him that it would no longer be in the King's interests to take risks to seize these castles, to which Wolseley replied on 17 May that he had had news that since the taking of the said castle the enemy had abandoned Tullavin [Tullerain?], Karricke [Carrick?] and Mickrass [Muckross?].
