The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is a collaborative research laboratory fully-owned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It was formed in April 2010 by bringing together the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, and the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL), Liverpool. The merged National Oceanography Centre aims to deliver integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean, working in partnership with the UK marine research community.
The National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, was renamed from 1 May 2005 having previously been created in 1994 and opened in 1996 as the Southampton Oceanography Centre.
The Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL), based in Liverpool, had its origins as far back as the 1840s. It was renamed in 2000 when the Centre for Coastal and Marine Services (CCMS), of which the laboratory was a part, was closed and the POL became an independent institute under the NERC. As part of the reorganisation in 2010, POL was renamed the National Oceanography Centre, Liverpool.
