The role of the National Digital Archive of Datasets (NDAD) was to preserve and provide online access to archived digital datasets from a number of Government departments. Datasets in the collection varied considerably in scope and content and were preserved as part of an effort to ensure that these early digital datasets (the earliest was originally created in 1963) were available to the public. While the datasets remained in legal custody of The National Archives, they were handled, edited, and published by the University of London Computer Centre (ULCC). The service was launched in 1998 and datasets were gradually added to the collection so that several hundred were available by 2010. In that year it was decided that The National Archives would make the datasets available via its own DocumentsOnline service. Consequently, the NDAD website was closed in October 2010.
