Administrative / biographical background

They were kept on a continuous rather than monthly basis as with the ships' logs. They were maintained by someone who was usually otherwise engaged in either steering or depth keeping, so abbreviations tend to proliferate. Many of these logs are enhanced by either cryptic comments of "matelots humour" or drawings/cartoons of topical interest.
