Description

French merchant ships captured in East Indies (including at the second battle of Pondicherry) by the squadron under the command of Commodore Sir Edward Vernon.

The squadron comprised several vessels, all of whom had a claim to the action:

  • Naval ships: HMS Rippon, HMS Cormorant, HMS Seahorse, and HMS Coventry;
  • East India Company armed ships Resolution and Charlotte;
  • East India Company merchant ships Southampton and Nassau;
  • Non-commissioned ships Valentine and Bessborough.
The depositions contradict each other. The other common factor in these depositions is that the respective commanders were never named.
