Description

Folios 181-182. A letter from Captain Nicholson to Captain Henry Villiers, dated at Tynemouth Castle [Northumberland] advising that he has arrested a Dunkirker [Dunkirk, France] with a Spanish pass, that lay here. She pretends to be assigned to Sir William Creagh, of Newcastle, merchant of Newcastle [upon Tyne], but it is suspected to 'being French', but a master who saw her at Dunkirk says she belongs to the French King's subjects. I have arrested her and set a guard on board. Provides biographical information on Villiers, and of Creagh whose brother was Lord Mayor of Dublin [Ireland]. (1) An account of Sir William Creagh. He was mayor of Newcastle in 1687, and during his mayoralty 'got the charter of the town clerk altered.' He is a Roman Catholic and his brother is lord mayor of Dublin. About two months ago Sir William was questioned by the Custom House of Newcastle for lading a ship, wherein was a great deal of lead, for France. (2) The case of Captain Henry Villiers. His father used to have, sometimes, 'prizes' granted him by Charles II.; there is now, as is supposed, a prize [vessel] in his custody; which, if proved so to be by the Lords Commissioners for regulating prizes, he begs the King to bestow upon him.
