Description

Folios 57-58. Memorandum addressed to the States at the Hague from the Count de Lannoy, envoy from the Bishop of Liege. Further to the support provided by means of the Regiments of Berlo and L'Ecluse, the Count de Lannoy has been charged to thank them and assure them of their friendship and common interests. He proposes for the Dragoon Regiment of the Count of Berlo and the Infantry Regiment of M. l'Ecluse to be put into his services under the following conditions: (1) That the officers of these regiments take an oath to him [the Bishop of Liege] and follow his orders (a note in the margin states that the Regiments should remain in the allegiance of the States, under whose disposition they are employed for the protection of Liege); (2) That these Regiments will not be at the expense of the Bishop of Liege (a note in the margin states that as the Regiments will remain in the allegiance with the States [General of Holland] , so they shall remain in the States' pay); (3) That the Dragoons shall only take forage from the country, the Infantry only "simple service" (a note in the margin accepts this); (4) That the Regiments stay in the service of the Bishop of Liege for as long as needed and should further troops be required, the Prince of Waldeck and the Commander of Maestricht are to have orders to send reinforcements to serve under the same conditions (a note in the margin suggests the term be fixed at 1 or 2 months, variable by agreement between the two parties, and that the disposition of the troops is left to the Generals). It seems advisable that considerable troops be stationed South of the Sambre, towards Philippeville.
