The majority of the files are arranged in chronological order apart from ADM 169/985-1056 Accounts Book and Estimate Books, which have been grouped together in date order from 1926-1975.
The files dating up to 1959 were originally arranged and catalogued under six main subject blocks. Each subject contains further sub-categories, each one pertaining to a unique block number:

- ADMINISTRATION - LEGAL - PARLIAMENTARY (block numbers 200-299)
- INVESTMENTS (block numbers 300-399)
- PENSIONS - BENEFITS - BEQUEST - TRUSTS (block numbers 400-499)
- PROPERTY AND ESTATES (block numbers 500-599)
- ROYAL HOSPITAL SCHOOL (block numbers 600-699)
All subjects and sub-categories assigned to the files have been retained in the descriptions on Discovery.
The sub-categories can be found in the individual descriptions for each file and are located in round brackets, e.g. Bequests and Donations - Miscellaneous (401). You can search for a block number within the series to find files relating to a particular subject.
The reference numbers of these files have no relevance to the block number codes under which they were originally arranged. Files dating 1960 onwards are arranged in file number order according to the block numbers given above.
